South stars, including Mahesh Babu, Jr NTR and Vijay Deverakonda, aren’t all that humble as their social media image lets out, claims Bollywood’s seasoned paparazzo Varinder Chawla. The paparazzo said comparison of Bollywood celebrities with South stars doesn’t make sense as unlike the latter, their humility is not for the camera. Post pandemic, and especially after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the Hindi film industry came under fire for operating in cliques and for its seemingly gatekeeping attitude towards outsiders. This was also the time when some of the South Indian films started doing well at the box office and an immediate comparison was drawn between how simple the south stars were, as compared to the allegedly notorious Bollywood celebrities. In an interview with Hindi Rush, Varinder Chawla was asked about the perception of South stars on social media, as the generally quieter, grounded bunch. The paparazzo dismissed the image with examples, from Vijay Deverakonda appearing in slippers to promote his film Liger to Jr NTR losing his cool recently. “To be honest, I think woh log naklipan karte hai (they indulge in fakery). They act like that only for the camera. There was an actor who would appear in slippers during the promotions of the film to deliberately pretend to be humble in front of the camera,” he said. And when the hosts asked if he was talking about Vijay Devarakonda, he nodded. He then added, “Recently, my team shot a video of a big South star, who is normally very quiet. He was going inside the hotel when he snapped at my team member. I didn’t put it, but the other photographer who had also shot it uploaded it.” Although he didn’t use Jr NTR’s name, but a video of the star losing his cool recently surfaced on social media. Varinder Chawla then also spoke about Mahesh Babu and said the Telugu star had dismissed Bollywood in the presence of several Hindi film press, including himself, when they went to Bengaluru to attend the event of the film Major. “He was openly saying we don’t need Bollywood; they can’t afford me. I thought what is this attitude? I do feel woh naklipan zyada hai. They compare Bollywood. but here at least the actors aren’t fake. They are seen how they are, if they are getting angry, that’s public as well,” he concluded. Mahesh Babu had courted controversy when he was asked about his plans to make his foray into Bollywood, stating that “Bollywood can’t afford me,” a statement he said he knew might come across as “arrogant”. Later, the actor clarified that his intention was to put across the point that he always wanted to do Telugu films and would keep them as the priority. “I strongly feel, why should we go to another industry by leaving ours behind? I am very happy that our films are reaching there (in North India). Our movies are doing well at the pan-India level and my dream is coming true,” the actor had clarified.
