WESTLAKE, Ohio – Reckless operation: Crocker Park A Caller at 9:20 p.m. on May 30 reported a reckless driver at Crocker Park speeding and flipping off other drivers. Officers located the described vehicle, observed dangerous driving, and attempted to stop it on Crocker Road. The driver fled in the vehicle. The officers pursued but quickly terminated due to the dangerous speed of the suspect. Using the suspect’s license plate, the officers responded to the registered owner’s residence in North Olmsted. The owner explained that his 15-year-old son took the car without permission. The youth was called and responded to the house. The officers explained the ramifications of reckless driving and running from the police. He was turned over to his parents. Charges of failing to comply, driving without a license, and reckless operation will be filed with the juvenile court, according to a police department statement. OVI: Columbia Road A witness called the Westlake Police Department at 3:45 p.m. on May 26 to report a car weaving and driving on the wrong side of Columbia Road. Officers spotted the vehicle as it struck a curb while pulling into Dunkin Donuts. The male driver appeared to be intoxicated and had food spilled on the front of his shirt and pants. The driver told the officers it was ice cream. The man’s pants were on backward. He gave the officers a couple of different names and dates of birth, but the officers soon learned that he was a 42-year-old Parma resident with six active warrants on charges including carrying a concealed weapon, child neglect, and shoplifting. He was field-tested and arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The officers noted that the man was nodding off while being processed in the jail. He refused a chemical test but admitted that he was a heroin user, according to a police statement. In addition to OVI, the suspect was charged with refusing a chemical test with a prior OVI conviction, driving under suspension, and misidentification. Weapons possession: Clemens Road Officers at 2 p.m. on May 28 observed three men in what appeared to be a heated debate in the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel on Clemens. The men got into a vehicle and began driving away, but officers stopped the car for traffic violations and learned that none of the occupants had a valid driver’s license. The 46-year-old driver, who listed the hotel as his residence, possessed a loaded 9 mm handgun. He was not allowed to possess a firearm due to previous convictions of domestic violence, drug violations, and felonious assault, according to the police department. He was arrested and charged with felony possession of a weapon while under disability, driving with no license, and disobeying traffic control devices. The passengers were released. Driving under suspension: Crocker Park A Crocker Park resident called the police department at 3 p.m. on May 29 to report that a man was ringing doorbells and asking people for money. Officers stopped the 36-year-old Cleveland man as he began driving away in a Chevrolet Tahoe. The officers cited him for driving under suspension and towed his car. He also was wanted by three other agencies on active warrants on charges including theft. A 34-year-old Cleveland woman accompanying him also was wanted on a warrant. However, none of the other police departments was willing to pick up the suspects. Officers released the suspects to await a ride. Carrying a concealed weapon: Detroit Road An apartment resident at 11 p.m. on May 29 called the police department to report that two men parked in a handicapped spot outside the apartment complex were “wiping down” a firearm and waving it around inside the car. Officers located the handgun and discovered that neither of the men was allowed to possess the weapon as they were only 19 years old. The driver admitted that the gun was his. The Akron man was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Theft: Crocker Park A 64-year-old visitor to the city at noon on May 30 reported her wallet was stolen while she shopped at Trader Joe’s. The victim reported that two women approached her in the store. One of them, a 40-year-old with a heavy accent, engaged the victim in conversation by asking about flowers for sale in the aisle. The shorter suspect distracted the victim while an accomplice lifted the victim’s wallet from her unzipped purse, which was in a shopping cart. The victim soon received notice that one of her credit cards was being used at the Apple Store at Crocker Park. The suspects were gone when officers responded to the electronics store. Investigators are attempting to gather surveillance footage of the suspects. Get police blotters by email every weekday for free with our new Police Blotter newsletter.
