Their latest showing is taking visitors on a fairytale adventure. Now on view through October 27, 2024, “Wonderland: Curious Nature” takes inspiration from the pages of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and its sequel, “Through the Looking-Glass, And What Alice Found There.” Many themes and characters from these Lewis Carroll novels are reflected throughout the 250-acre garden. “At The New York Botanical Garden, we’re plant people,” said Michael Crowley, NYBG’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We embrace opportunities to help the public immerse themselves in beautiful experiences and explore the wonders of nature.” On NYBG’s Conservatory Lawn, visitors can walk among a display of kinetic mushrooms, designed by FoldHaus Art Collective, that lights up at night. The Haupt Conservatory is full of Victorian garden displays, reflecting what was found in Alice’s 19th-century England, while the Mertz Library holds details on the plants and fungi listed in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” The Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden is featuring materials highlighting the famous … [+] children’s literature character Alice. With an “Eat This and Drink This” format, all of NYBG’s food and beverage locations are offering sweet treats, specialty drinks, and savory nibbles. This wonderland-like culinary offering is not the first time that NYBG has tied a food format to an exhibition. Previously, for example, the garden’s 2015 exhibit on painter Frida Kahlo featured both a pop-up cantina and a Mexican themed food. “’Wonderland: Curious Nature’ is the most elaborate, since there is such an obvious food and beverage tie-in to the beloved story, from the tea party to Alice eating cakes and mushrooms, as well as drinking beverages, to grow taller and smaller,” said Crowley. “Making food part of the experience was a natural connection.” The Hudson Garden Grill at the New York Botanical Garden will offer an afternoon tea menu inspired … [+] by the “Wonderland: Curious Nature” exhibit.
