LAGOS – Lions Club International has increased its charters in the country with the inauguration of Lagos Aviators Lions Club District 404-B4 Nigeria, on Sunday in Lagos State. Lion Clare Okoro, was also sworn-in as the pioneer Charter President of the Aviators Lions Club, while new members were inducted, thereby bringing its total membership in the new charter to 40. In his remarks at the inauguration of the new charter, Lion Samson Abodunrin, the Governor, Lions Club, congratulated the leadership of the new charter and its members for taking the lead to contribute to humanity in the society. Abodunrin who was also the Pioneer Director-General, 404-B4 Nigeria, tasked the executives to be transparent, accountable, embrace effective communication, team work and always delegate its members for the good of the club. He also called on the Charter President to always carry every member along and appealed to members to regularly pay their foreign and local dues which, he emphasised made them bonafide member of the club. Abodunrin reiterated that the club was for service to humanity and appealed to everyone, including guests to deploy their resources to the upliftment of the less privileged in the society. He said: “Celebrating your date with history today as a pioneer President of your club under District 404-B4 Nigeria, comes with a headline reminder that you are a pacesetter and you need to be on your toes all the way to ensure you lay a bedrock foundation of service benchmark in Lionism opulence and service metrics for your success to emulate and build on. “As you are being sworn-in today as the Charter President of your club along other charter officers, your allegiance is to upload the ideals of Lions and ensure to lay a foundation solid enough to uphold a dream structure that would weather any storm or challenges that come in the line of service.” Also speaking at the occasion, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, the Chairman of the occasion, recalled that as a student seeking admission in the university, Lions Club paid his first-year tuition and stipends, amounting to N1,000 in 1986. According to Ipaye who was also the Commissioner for Health, Ogun State, the scholarship offered to him by Lions Club, enabled him to pay school fee of N279 for a session and addressed some regularly challenges within the period. He enjoined other members of the society to emulate Lions Club and assist the less privilege in attaining growth. Ipaye who was also decorated as the Patron of Lions Club, made a total donation of N750,000 for the growth of the club. In her inaugural speech, Lion Okoro, said that the club was all about membership drive. Okoro assured that the charter would continue to ensure the growth of Lions Club and ensured it reached the 1.5 million membership target worldwide. She explained that Lions Club International is known for humanitarian services, which included feeding the hungry, treatment of childhood cancer, disaster relief, youth empowerment, environment and diabetes. Okoro maintained that these core services needed members to carry them out in their domiciled communities, which led to the chartering of the Aviators Lions Club. She added: “Lions Club is an association of like-minds who work together to achieve a common purpose of service to humanity. With what we are doing right now, I can assure you that we are going to grow more, especially in the country and in the aviation industry in particular. “Presently, we are about 40 membership in the Lagos aviation industry alone and we intend to grow further. I want to ensure that we have more people to work towards this cause that we are chasing and ensure that we reach a lot of people more. “Also, I want to assure you that this very Lions Club is going to be one of the best in the whole district in the next five years with the collaboration of my team. With a team work, you can go to any length and get to the peak where you want to get to.” Speaking on behalf of new inductees, Lion Oluseyi Akinkunmi, thank the leadership of the club for giving them the chance to contribute to the growth of humanity through Lions Club. He maintained that as new members, they would partner with the charter leadership in further touching the lives of the less privileged, while also sustaining the mission and vision of the club worldwide. He added: “There is no bigger way of serving God than serving humanity. Lion Melvin Jones, Founder International Association of Lions Club, has left a big legacy that we will continue to grow and ensure it makes more impacts. “I will be happy to bring in more people into the club for the betterment of humanity.” The highlight of the event was the presentation of charter certificate to Lion Okoro and other members of the charter. No fewer than 49,000 Lions Club members globally while its association membership is set to increase from the present 1.4 million worldwide to 1.5 million. In Lagos alone, Lions Club has over 6,000 membership with about 250 clubs.
