The evacuation of over 1,200 tourists, including 15 foreigners, stranded in Sikkims Mangan district, is anticipated to commence on Monday, weather conditions permitting. The operation was delayed due to adverse weather, according to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kiran Thatal of Chungthang. The district administration has been proactive in ensuring the well-being of these tourists, providing them with accommodation and food at nominal rates in Lachung town.SDM Kiran Thatal has been at the forefront of coordinating efforts for a smooth evacuation process, either by air or road, based on the weather conditions. A meeting was held with Chungthang BDO Pipon Lachung and local hotel owners to discuss the logistics of the evacuation. Hotel owners have been instructed not to evict tourists until the evacuation is underway.In a significant development, Roads Bridges Department Minister N B Dahal visited Lachung to assess the situation firsthand. During his visit, he interacted with stranded tourists, listening to their concerns and assuring them of a safe and prompt evacuation.The urgency of the evacuation stems from recent landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Sikkim, which have claimed at least six lives. These natural disasters have not only resulted in loss of life but also caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure, disrupting power and food supplies as well as mobile networks across several areas.The Border Roads Organisation is actively working to clear the roads and restore connectivity with North Sikkim, which is crucial for the evacuation process. The collective efforts of local authorities and organizations aim to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by this calamity.This incident highlights the challenges posed by natural disasters in hilly regions and underscores the importance of timely and coordinated response efforts to mitigate their impact on human lives and property.
