They don’t call her “Big Latto” for no reason. This past weekend, Atlanta rapper Latto, made big history as the first woman to ever headline Birthday Bash in her hometown. For those who don’t know, the Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash is one of the biggest concerts in Atlanta, taking place during summertime every year. But it’s more than just a concert… it’s an experience. Birthday Bash is like the Atlanta Coachella for hip-hop. In the past, artists such as Gucci Mane, Cardi B, Drake, and Lil Wayne have performed on the Birthday Bash stage. Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9 became the first station in the city dedicated to only hip-hop and rap music in 1995, according to 11 Alive News. In 2002, Hot 107.9 hosted the first-ever Birthday Bash, with performances from Outkast and Goodie Mob, who is considered one of the founding acts of the “dirty south” music scene. Since then, Birthday Bash has become a staple in the Atlanta community and, as time continues, a staple for hip-hop lovers globally. Whenever Birthday Bash comes to town, the energy in Atlanta turns electric. Billboards promoting the concert go up everywhere as businesses and residents alike prepare their ears and their pockets to have a great time. Atlantans are known to show up and out for their city and for their musical artists. This year, Latto & Friends took to the stage, and had special surprises for concert goers. She brought out ten special guests including local Atlanta legends Roscoe Dash, Diamond, and Love & Hip Hop star Rasheeda. She even showed love to the young women in music, bringing out Summer Walker, Mariah The Scientist, Flo Milli and rapper Anycia from Riverdale, Georgia, where Latto is from. Even King of R&B Usher hit the stage and shared a special message for the “Big Energy” rapper. In the middle of his set, Usher made sure to recognize Latto for this historic feat. “We have this thing that we do in Atlanta where we just seem to keep making history,” he said. “We want to give her [Latto] her flowers one time.” Since March, when she was announced as the show’s headliner, Latto has been hyping her fans with new music, behind the scenes content, and hints at special guests in preparation for “Big Latto Bash,” as she calls it. To open her set, Latto performed her Billboard Hot 100 hit “Sunday Service,” which was remixed by Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli. The entire show was an ode to Atlanta. For out of town visitors, Latto made sure to show them exactly how Atlanta gets down. Stage props included a life size Georgia peach and Atlanta street signs which doubled as dancing poles. Despite technical difficulties, it was clear that Latto and her fans had a blast. The rapper also announced her second studio album titled “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” which is set to be released later this year. After the show, Latto took to Instagram thanking “16,000+ sold out in my city!!! Real tears watching all this footage!!!” She continued saying “Im flooding today idc yall wouldn’t understand the feeling!!! Real Atlanta KNOW I put in overtime yall really watched me grow up @hot1079atl thank u for trusting me!”
