A CUT BELOW: Detroit Tigers’ Jack Flaherty finds elite version of fastball, slider by scrapping cutter
Game notes: Welcome back, Spencer Turnbull. Then again, Comerica Park hasn’t always been the friendliest of confines for the righty; he brings a career 4.35 ERA with 12 home runs allowed — nearly as many as he’s allowed in every other park combined (17) — in 30 appearances at the CoPa. That includes three home runs allowed in 15 innings last season, when the Tigers moved in the Comerica Park fence in center and right-center. He arrives having struck out 145 and walked 56 in 155 innings at Comerica from 2018-23 … though he didn’t get to face the Tigers, who can be prone to strikeouts of their own — in those innings. (The Tigers entered Tuesday 10th in team strikeouts, with 8.8 a game, then added five more on Tuesday night.) As for the Tigers’ starter? Well, it probably won’t be 23-year-old righty Keider Montero, even though the rookie is getting a one-day call-up from Triple-A Toledo. With the Phils’ lineup stocked with left-handed sluggers — we see you, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott — manager A.J. Hinch is likely to open with a left-handed reliever before bringing in Montero to eat some innings. The Tigers are one of baseball’s best in retiring lefties, by the way; they entered Tuesday holding southpaws to a .646 OPS, sixth in the majors. While we’re on the topic of lefties, outfielder Riley Greene is putting on a nice push to grab an All-Star reserve spot, with an eight-game hitting streak extended by Tuesday’s triple in the fifth inning. Over that span, Greene has a slash line of .346/.452/.654, which is pretty solid. After today’s matinee, the Tigers hit the road for a 10-game road trip, starting with four games against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. (beginning Thursday). As July rolls around, they’ll then head to Minneapolis for three games beginning Tuesday and then finish it off with three games in Cincinnati from July 5-7. The Phillies, meanwhile, head back to Philadelphia for four games against the Miami Marlins before visiting the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
