BEREA, Ohio—After joining Mayor Cyril Kleem and administrative assistant Guy Turner for a first look at the new Coe Lake Treehouse, it’s obvious that this new addition to the park will be a favorite of everyone. The structure, designed by CT Consultants, has 3,000 sq. Ft. contained on several separate platforms, including the main treehouse, flanked on the north by a stand-alone tree-hugging platform accessible from the treehouse by way of a rope bridge. To the south, an overlook standing 14 feet above ground and accessible by a stairway provides a panoramic view of the lake. The floor of the treehouse is about ten feet above ground level and is accessible by both a stairway and a hydraulic lift for the handicapped. Kleem explained that the preservation of existing trees played a key role in the layout and design of the treehouse. “Drilling of foundation supports was done in such a way as to avoid tree root damage.” While the treehouse has a conventional shingled roof, the upper deck on its south side will have a specially designed roof resembling a sail. County grants totaling $580,000, plus a $30,000 grant from the Berea Kiwanis Club, made construction of the $700,000 project possible. Zerbe Construction built the treehouse, the Coe Lake Amphitheater, and McKelvey Park on the city’s Triangle.
