Shonda Rimes
This week’s inclusion hero is Shonda Rimes. The award-winning television producer and screenwriter has a long history of inclusive storytelling and casting. On Juneteenth, a significant holiday validating the impact of American history, she released the documentary Black Barbie with director Lagueria Davis on the Netflix platform. The story reviews the history of the Mattel organization’s Barbie product and the crucial gaps in representation and community impact that led to the creation of Black Barbie. Shonda’s advocacy helps to inform and educate the masses. She is an ally who sees the need to amplify hidden figures’ legacy (in this case, Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins, and Stacey McBride-Irby) to inspire greatness for the next generation. Black Barbie is only one amongst many shows (i.e., Bridgerton, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal, and more) that Shonda has developed that showcases the beauty of diversity and inclusion in action. From an inclusive leadership lens, there is an opportunity to pay attention to lessons from Shonda’s masterclasses on inclusion and apply them to the workplace to amplify and achieve inclusion goals significantly. Shonda’s work has set a benchmark for representation and enlightened us on the importance of diversity in our narratives.

Amplify Representation In The Workplace The intentional way that Shonda Rimes amplifies (meaning it’s hard to miss) representation in the Bridgerton series demonstrates what an inclusively optimized workplace looks like when differences are acknowledged and celebrated. Not only do her characters of all diversity dimensions (i.e., race, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities, and more) take center stage in storylines, but she also employs a diverse team to ensure accurate representation. The identities are prominent, and widespread awareness (i.e., navigating bias, imagining possibilities where people’s differences are normalized and not problematic) occurs due to interest in enticing storylines that cause viewers to await each release anxiously and visualize leadership possibilities. Due to her impactful body of work, Shonda Rimes has a long-term 100-million dollar partnership deal with Netflix. Additionally, millions tune in to the Bridgerton series, one of Netflix’s most-watched shows of all time. Keep up healthy discussions to promote an inclusive workplace.

One tool used to promote insightful outcomes is the doll test experiment, initiated by Psychologist Dr. Kenneth Clark. The test shows feedback on what lack of representation represents and the impact that it can have on children, adults, and society. What if inclusive leaders, who aren’t already doing so, recommit to having representation conversations in the workplace and openly discuss the organization’s progress around representation? To do so, leaders must demonstrate behaviors that promote trust and safety so that these conversations can unearth these insights. The outcome would be increased transparency about the impact of the look of the workplace (especially in leadership) on workers with an opportunity to connect the dots to improve belonging in the workplace. Additionally, inclusive leaders can think about influencing organizational change when representation is low or missing. These discussions are not just necessary, but they are also engaging and can lead to a more committed and inclusive workplace. Be sure to keep a close watch on the work that Shonda Rimes presents because it is sure to include an inclusive lens. Follow me on LinkedIn. Check out my website or some of my other work here.
