Changing dirty nappies isn’t on the fun side of parenting, but it’s all part of the experience. Many parents will know all too well the routine of sniffing to see if their baby has a dirty nappy – or having a little look to see if it’s wet. But it turns out there’s a much easier way to check if your tot used their nappy yet – and it’s something many parents had no clue about until now. Actress, author and YouTuber Carrie Hope Fletcher recently took to TikTok to share the knowledge with fellow parents, after just learning it herself. Carrie, who became a new mum in March 2024, explained she had no clue that nappies actually have a hidden indicator which tells you when it’s dirty. And as Carrie believed there would be “people out there who didn’t have this information prior to becoming a mum”, she wanted to share the knowledge. Blowing many new parents’ minds, Carrie continued: “Nappies have a wetness indicator. There is a yellow line that turns blue when your child has peed, so there’s no guessing game about whether they need changing or not. If they’ve pooped, you can smell it, that’s the dead giveaway, but if they’ve peed, this yellow line turns blue.” However, it’s important to remember not all nappies have wetness indicators. For example, Carrie said a brand called Kit & Kin, who avoid chemicals in their nappies, don’t have them. But Pampers and Fred & Flo certainly do, according to the mum-of-one. In the comment section it was very clear Carrie wasn’t the only parent who had no idea that nappies had such a genius function. “This IS brand new information (for me),” said one person. Another mum added: “My daughter is seven and I didn’t know this.” A third added: “My partner is a single dad and he said he knew this! Mind-blown as I never knew this!” Someone else commented: “I am a childcare worker and only learned this when I started working.” However, some also added the wetness indicator tends to be a function on smaller sizes, but not as they get bigger. “Until they get to size 3 and you’re back to guessing,” one person shared. “Only up to size 3 (I think) for most brands though,” another confirmed.
