Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s lengthy divorce is still ongoing. A source close to Pitt tells PEOPLE it’s “pretty shocking” that the Wolfs actor, 60, and Maria actress, 49, still “can’t find a resolution and finalize the divorce,” nearly eight years after she filed. The former couple tied the knot during an intimate wedding in the French village of Correns on Aug. 23, 2014. However, after a decade together and two years of marriage, the pair’s relationship came to an end when Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 20, 2016. “A major reason for their unhappiness before Angelina filed for divorce was their frequent clashes over parenting their kids,” says the source of Pitt and Jolie, who share six kids: Maddox, 23, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. The source says the former couple “always had different approaches to life just in general,” considering Pitt didn’t grow up in Hollywood but Jolie did. Angie wanted them all to find themselves and to figure out what excited them and sparked passion.” “One can say this parenting approach won,” the source says. “The kids are free-spirited, super smart and artsy. Brad is very proud though.” Eight years later, Pitt and Jolie’s contentious legal battle has continued as the actors argue over custody and their finances, as well as a separate lawsuit regarding the French winery, Château Miraval. Says another insider familiar with the dispute, “Hopefully they can both get on the same page to at least resolve the matrimonial side of things while the Miraval case plays out.” A source told PEOPLE in July that before Jolie filied for divorce, “their disagreements took over” in the relationship, adding that things “turned nasty and it was not a good situation for anyone.” “All the bitterness is partly why the divorce has dragged on for so many years. Neither will let it go,” the insider said at the time. Meanwhile, both Pitt and Jolie are attending the 81st Venice Film Festival, which kicked off Wednesday, Aug. 28, and runs through Sept. 7. The exes will not cross paths at the festival, however, as the premiere of Jolie’s Maria is taking place Thursday, Aug. 29, while Wolfs has its premiere Sunday, Sept. 1. Jolie spoke at a press conference for Maria on Thursday before the film’s premiere. When asked how she personally related to real-life opera singer Maria Callas, she told reporters, “There’s a lot I won’t say in this room that you probably know and assume.” “I related to the part of her that is extremely soft and didn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was and as emotionally open as she truly was,” the Oscar winner added of Callas. “I think I share her vulnerability more than anything.”
