Emma Roberts has responded to rumours linking her to the forthcoming Britney Spears biopic. Last month, Felicia Culotta, the pop icon’s long-time assistant, told TMZ that Roberts would be an ideal choice to play Spears in Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the memoir The Woman in Me. She highlighted the similarities between their early careers as Roberts was with Nickelodeon while Spears was at Disney Channel. Culotta also suggested Timothee Chalamet for Justin Timberlake, who was in a relationship with Spears for three years, and Drew Barrymore to portray herself. “I was like, I love her assistant,” Roberts shared with Cosmo about the casting speculation. “I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears. It’s a rumour, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorise every word.'” “I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I’m always like, ‘God, he must think I’m so weird.’ That’s some millennial parenting,” she added. However, the Madame Web actress faces tough competition from Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, who previously expressed her desire to portray the ‘Toxic’ singer if given the chance to bring a real person to life on screen, reports the Mirror. The actor shared her connection to the pop star, saying: “Her story resonates with me. Just growing up in the public eye, watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger… I don’t know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way.” When the biopic was first being talked about, a source told The Mirror: “Britney’s book was a ground-breaking bestseller and raised the public’s consciousness with regards to how the entertainment industry and conservatorships work. She’s in advanced talks to turn it into a cinematic release and her songwriters have been informed that some of her songs will be used once it is greenlit. If necessary, the project could become a mini-series in the style of Genius: Aretha. “Female writers are being approached to turn the book into a script because only a woman can understand the nuances that made Britney’s role in her family, and position in pop culture, so complicated.”
