Jon Rahm’s entry into this month’s Spanish Open is still yet to be confirmed, with the LIV Golf star facing a race against time to keep hold of his Ryder Cup eligibility. Rahm’s Ryder Cup future heading towards 2025 has been doubted in recent months following his move to the LIV setup. Whilst the Spaniard’s LIV loyalties alone do not make him ineligible to compete for Team Europe, his commitments to the breakaway league have caused some complications. Rahm has opted to keep hold of his DP World Tour membership to remain eligible to compete on the Ryder Cup stage, but in order to continue as a member, he is required to compete in four events on the Wentworth-based circuit this year. As things stand, the former world No. 1 has played in just one DP World Tour sanctioned event this year – the Olympic Games – and with the clock ticking on the 2024 season, Rahm is running out of time to fulfil his requirements. Rahm previously revealed he hoped to return to compete at the Spanish Open at the end of September as one of his three remaining events. Tournament organisers have informed Mirror Sport however that they are still in the dark as to whether the 29-year-old will compete. The update is all the more concerning for European golf fans, with tournament entries on the DP World Tour usually closed two weeks before an event. In the case of the Spanish Open, this two-week deadline falls this Thursday, leaving Rahm less than 48 hours to commit. Speaking at The Open Championship in July, the Spanish star admitted his entry into his home open would depend on the pregnancy of his wife Kelley. At this point, I’m so still waiting on what might happen with my wife and daughter that I don’t know if I’ll be able to play or not. “So my fall is still a little bit of a question mark when it comes to playing golf.” One man who will no doubt be keen to see Rahm tick off his four DP World Tour starts is Team Europe captain Luke Donald. Addressing Rahm’s situation at the British Masters last month, Donald told reporters: “I’ve had many conversations with Jon. “He knows what the deal is. Nothing has changed from last year. He knew when he signed for LIV what the policies were on the DP World Tour. You have to play your four per all the policies you can pay the fines or appeal like some of the guys have. He knows that. It’s up to him to do that. “He certainly mentioned at the PGA Championship he was willing to do whatever it took to commit to me and the team. I hope that happens.” For now Rahm’s focus will firmly be on his commitments with LIV Golf, with the two-time Ryder Cup winner leading the league’s individual standings ahead of the final regular season event in Chicago this week.
