McDougall said both the police commission and council have different information, and when councillors are acting as commissioners they may be working with information that other commissioners don’t have. Perhaps, he said, a councillor could be thinking about the city’s finances and “not what the service needs.” Report interviewed commissioners, cops Council heard the independent review stemmed from 15 interviews with members of the police commission, senior Edmonton Police Service staff, and from looking at practices in other Canadian cities. Tang told Postmedia crafting policy directly from such an internal review is not good practice. “What’s the problem we’re trying to solve? Is it about depoliticizing policing? Does removing councillors solve that? I would say no,” she said. “This is already politicized.” As for the future, Tang wants to see the commission do other work before she would consider this again. “If they go back and they have a public conversation about it — and I think the public is ready to have these kinds of conversations — then I ‘ll be interested to know what other feedback they get.” A council task force in 2021 also recommended having two more community members instead of councillors in the Safer for All report, along with stronger oversight of the police from the commission and other recommendations.
