Sharmila Tagore Talks About Time Discipline in Indian Cinema
Sharmila Tagore, regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema and a Padma Bhushan awardee, recently talked about the stars from her time who didn’t value time. Taking examples of actors from her time and now, the veteran star shared how things regarding time have changed in Bollywood.
Talking about it in detail, Sharmila said that the Hindi film industry is far more disciplined, “Even if you are Ranveer Singh or Ranbir Kapoor, you will be reconsidered (in a film) if you are late.” In a recent conversation with legal eagle Kapil Sibal, Sharmila Tagore revealed, “Shashi Kapoor was the first one who was on time and Amitabh went a little ahead because he would be the first to arrive before anybody else, even before the cleaners came. In case of Sanjeev Kumar, you could only suggest time to him but anybody even Rajesh Khanna used to be late.”
Due to this, everybody on set including Tagore, who was a working mother used to suffer. When Sibal asked, “You were working two shifts, morning and evening, and you had to look after your children and if somebody comes 4-5 hours late, it would make your life impossible.”
Agreeing with Sibal, Sharmila said, “Yes, you felt like killing them but you couldn’t.” The actress, who established herself as one of the leading actresses of Hindi cinema with films like Waqt, Daag, Amar Prem, and Chupke Chupke, among others, shared how the time problem has now changed. She revealed, “That is now changed because money is in place and they can’t afford somebody so what they do now they make a contract which says they will work for 10 hours or they will work for 8 hours, beginning now lets say it starts at 2 in the afternoon then carry on for 10 hours or if they start at 4 in the evening, they will carry on for 10 hours from then. So the contract is made accordingly so if they want to wake up late or if they want to workout, their workout is very important. Like Akshay Kumar, he works out for 3-4 hours and then runs for a while and then he starts working so that’s alright. But to keep people waiting for four hours even if you are Ranveer Singh or Ranbir Kapoor, but if you are four hours late, people will reconsider.”
The actress, who has worked in over 100 films, was recently seen in the film Gulmohar alongside Manjoh Bajpayee. Sharmila Tagore married Mansoor Ali Khan-cricketer and the son of Iftikhar ALiKhan Pataudi, the last ruler of the princely state of Pataudi during the British Raj. The couple has three children-Saif Ali Khan, Soha, and Saba.
