Phizzical has released the trailer for their upcoming and latest production BombaySuperstars. A pre-West End performance of the showcase concert version took place onSunday 12th September at Dance City, Newcastle. The concert version of the musicaldebuted for one night only on Sunday 15th September, at His Majesty’s Theatre, West End,London. The musical version will then be running from Friday 8th – Sunday 17thNovember at Beck Theatre, Hayes.
Bombay Superstars is a scintillating concert musical that delves into the disco, the divasand the drama that shaped Bollywood icons. Set against the backdrop of 1970s Bombay,the musical unfolds a scandalous battlefield of ambition, desire, and betrayal. An orphanedgirl, who is shunned by society, arrives in the city of dreams to meet the famed director,Pavan Picturewalla. As he struggles to protect a long-held secret from his beloved daughterMala, who is in love with rising actor Arjun, Pavan is drawn into a new turmoil. Meanwhile,superstar Bunty schemes to seize it all by transforming the young orphan into Rani, helpingher claim her rightful place in the world of Bombay Superstars.
Created by the visionary Sâmir Bhamra, Bombay Superstars is a colourful and deliciousromantic musical about anguished love, master manipulation and the unbreakable bonds offamily during the dazzling golden era of Bollywood cinema. The musical features iconicBollywood classic hits like “Bachna Ae Haseeno,” “Dum Maro Dum,” “Khaike Paan,” “YehKahan Aa Gaye Hum,” and “Chura Liya,” along with new songs by Robby Khela andmusical arrangements by Hinal Pattani.
Bend it Like Beckham (Phoenix Theatre) vocalists, Rekha and Chirag Rao, as Rani andArjun will make their West End debuts as actors, with Omar Khan (Life of Pi, Wyndham’sTheatre) as Pavan returning to the West End. Sowmya JayKrish as Mala, Robby Khela asBunty, Sheetal Pandya as Dolly and Rukmini Sircar in a dual role of Mona and Pammi aremaking their West End debuts. In addition to the main cast, the musical boasts animpressive ensemble of dancers who will bring the stage to life with their energeticperformances: Aaron Mistry, Callum Quinnen, Cole Dilley, Daisy Hardy, Kush Saigal,Magi Barbazova, Preeti Sian, Prem Rai, Sophie Kandola and Tianna Sealy-Jewiss.
The performances will be energised by dynamic dances choreographed by the UK’s mostsought after Bollywood Dance Choreographer, Leena Patel (Strictly Come Dancing,Will.I.Am). The live music will be performed by The 515 Crew, led by musical director,Hinal Pattani (The Empress, RSC), featuring musicians, Dhaivat Acharya, Bindi Bhumbra,Ragen Brahmbhatt, Vikaash Sankadecha and Trushar Tailor.
The creative team includes sound designer Julian Starr (Sharon Osbourne – Cut the Crap!at Fortune Theatre), who is one of the ‘Top 4 Sound Designer and Composers in Australia(Stage Whispers) and lighting designer Pete Bragg.
