Strictly Come Dancing is back and dazzling viewers as this year’s stars get paired with their professional twirl partners. Among the celebrity line-up, is none other than Dr Punam Krishan, who is the familiar face from Morning Live and go-to GP. Tonight she became emotional talking about dancing to a Bollywood song, Bole Chudiyan from 2001 film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. She said: “I never saw Indian girls dancing on mainstream television, so to be doing now, an Indian dance, on a platform like Strictly, it’s huge. I am such a proud Scottish Indian girl. In this couple’s choice, I really just want to bring my culture and my heritage to the forefront.” Dr Krishan is not just another celeb vying for Strictly glory; she’s a self-proclaimed “mega fan” eyeing the coveted Glitterball trophy. But what fans might be surprised to discover is that Dr Krishan isn’t only a media medic – she’s also half of a power couple, married to Scottish Conservative health spokesman, Dr Sandesh Gulhane, whom she shared two children, son Aarish and daughter Ellora, reports the Scottish Daily Express. The BBC often spotlights Dr Krishan as a “media medic and broadcaster” owing to her frequent features on Morning Live, BBC Radio Scotland, and even dipping her toes into authorship with a children’s book under her belt. Though stepping onto the Strictly dance floor is a leap from her usual scene, Dr Krishan has vowed to tackle the challenge head-on. Dr Krishan has already been offering valuable advice to her professional dance partner Gorka Marquez and his Hollyoaks star wife Gemma Atkinson. Gorka and Gemma share two children, Mia and Thiago, and earlier this week, the soap star took to Instagram to explain that their youngest has been struggling with teething. Luckily for the pair, Dr Krishan was on hand, as Gemma told her 2M followers: “He wasn’t himself yesterday at all. I guess you just know with your kids. Last time he cut teeth he got an ear infection & his symptoms were similar so I took him and they confirmed its happened again. I have watched Strictly every year with my family and it feels extra special that it’s the 20th year, I can’t believe I will be the one getting Strictly-fied now. This is so out of my comfort zone, but I’m up for the journey and will give it my absolute all.” The delightful Dr Krishan also added during her appearance on Morning Live: “I cannot tell you how excited I feel. As a mega fan of the show for years, this honestly feels like a dream come true. And I’m in a very, very lucky position because many members of our Morning Live family have been there. “They’ve done it so I’m going to be tapping into all of their guidance and advice and wisdom just to help me through. I can’t wait for what’s ahead.” With credentials that shine bright, Dr Krishan, an NHS GP renowned for her expertise in public health, family and lifestyle medicine, has an additional feather in her cap as an educator at the University of Glasgow, where her journey in medicine began. Born on the 28 May 1983 in Glasgow, Punam stands proud as the eldest sibling in her family of four. She fondly recalls her upbringing, painted with the flavours of curry and fizz of Irn Bru, courtesy of her Indian parents who started their British life in the 1970s after moving from Punjab. She shared: “It was ingrained in us that education was the key to freedom. You were either going to be a doctor, lawyer, accountant or a failure.”
