Liza Minnelli is telling her story the way no one else can! The legendary entertainer and EGOT recipient, 78, is the subject of the new documentary, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story. The film premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday, June 12. “Thanks to my loves at Tribeca for tonight’s screening of, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, which I made as a gift for my family, friends and fans!” Minnelli said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “I lived it. To sit and watch the film with you, would be a tad too much. It is a true journey of poignant, amusing, magical moments in my life and work. I hope you love it. The film is one of the building blocks in the new skyscraper of my world today by showing people who care, (despite tabloid trash), I’m still loving, still kicking, still creating and to borrow from Sondheim, the great, baby…’I’m Still Here,’” the “Maybe This Time” singer continued. Although Minnelli was not in attendance for her big night in New York, she did share an additional message to her fans from Paris via Instagram. “Bonjour Paris… Hiya Kids, I’ve often said the day I was born I popped outta Mama and the press took a picture,” she began. Minnelli’s mother is the late Judy Garland. The Wizard of Oz actress was one of the biggest names during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her father, the late Vincent Minnelli, directed Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis and won an Oscar for directing Gigi. She added that the obsession with her life has been constant, with “some sleaze balls” resorting to “[making] up junk” instead of telling her true story. “My beloved sister Lorna Luft, who makes an all too brief appearance, and I decided we couldn’t, shouldn’t, wouldn’t sit in the audience to watch a tribute to me, about me,” Minnelli added of her absence. “I hope you love it. If you don’t, keep it to yourself…Ha! It shows my history and my life today and is only the beginning of renewing this phase of new ways to create at the ripe old age of 78! I don’t feel a day over,” Minnelli continued. Ahead of her 78th birthday in March, Minnelli spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about turning another year wiser. “I am so grateful for all the good wishes and all the love that comes my way. Not only on my birthday, but always,” she said at the time. “I wish I knew how to act my age. But kids guess what, I have never been this damn old! Just keep going baby, that’s the secret!”
