With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Physint, and OD, Hideo Kojima and his team at Kojima Productions have plenty on their plate, and though any game coming from the mind of Kojima is obviously going to demand attention, for many, it’s OD that looks the most intriguing. Touted as a horror experience that’s going to be halfway between a game and a movie while touting a star-studded cast, it’s clearly going to be quite an experimental project. Speaking recently in an interview with Variety, Kojima touched on the same, and reiterated how “risky” OD is going to be, calling it “a game like no other”, and a “new challenge” even for him as a developer. “This is a game, but it’s a game like no other,” Kojima said. “I can’t go into too much detail, and it’s also hard to explain, but it’s a bit risky and a new challenge for me within the realm of games.” This isn’t the first time that Kojima has spoken about OD’s uniqueness. Previously, he said it’s going to be as experimental as Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, a game that Kojima previously developed for the Game Boy Advance that utilized a sunlight sensor as a core component of its combat mechanics. Meanwhile, later on in the interview, Kojima also briefly spoke about Hollywood director Jordan Peele’s involvement in OD. “I was a fan of Jordan, and I went to go see Nope,” he explained. “At the time, I was doing a podcast on Spotify. I did an episode on Nope and found out that Jordan Peele was a fan of mine. So, we set up a Zoom call! He’s younger than me, so we’re not the same generation, but after just five minutes of chatting, he felt like a childhood friend. This happens quite often actually when the person’s thought process or brain structure is similar to mine. But anyways, we decided to meet in Los Angeles. After several meetings in L.A., we were talking about the projects each of us were working on. I explained the concept of OD to him, and he was really interested in it, so I asked him to join me.” Previously, Kojima explained that Peele will be involved in OD in a creative capacity, and though he didn’t elaborate on what exactly his role would entail, he revealed that there were other big-name stars like him that he was also collaborating on OD with. Earlier this year, Kojima Productions filed trademarks for “Social Scream System” and “Social Stealth”, potentially hinting at details related to OD. Read more on that through here.
