AN iconic Edinburgh street has been transformed as filming for a major new movie is underway. Frankenstein is currently being shot in the capital and Glasgow, with one of its most iconic thoroughfares closed off. A film crew has taken over the bottom half of The Canongate on the Royal Mile in the city’s old town. The ancient neighbourhood with its stone buildings forms an ideal backdrop for the film, based on Mary Shelley’s 19th century tale. Actors, actresses and extras were spotted pacing the pavements in period costumes. Men wore top hats, black cloaks, and felt caps, while women were dressed in gowns, veils, aprons and linen caps. Part of the road surface was covered in dirt and a horse-drawn carriage was filmed as it made its way along the road. One actor was filmed going up the street on the back of a horse. Shooting in the Old Town started on Sunday. The upcoming horror film is being directed by legendary Hollywood filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. The Netflix production has an all-star cast, including Star Wars actor Oscar Issac, Pearl actress Mia Goth, Django Unchained actor Christoph Waltz, and Euphoria and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi. Oscar-winner del Toro has long expressed an interest in making a version of Shelley’s iconic 1818 novel for the big screen. Last month, the Pan’s Labyrinth director stayed in a 200-year-old Scottish mansion that is said to be haunted. Filming for Frankenstein took place at the 24-bedroom Dunecht House on the outskirts of Aberdeen. Shooting also took place at Glasgow Cathedral last month. The medieval landmark was closed to the public to accommodate the big production.
