(Gallo Images/Die Burger/Jaco Marais) A top trade analyst has warned US legislators that China and Russia would celebrate should the US not renew the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), as this would only serve to alienate African countries from Washington, DC.”Failure to renew AGOA would be a strategic disaster for the US,” said Daniel Runde, vice president at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, in prepared remarks before a trade committee earlier this month. “AGOA is critical for US national security in a sensitive region of the world; champagne corks will pop in Beijing and Moscow over our failure to renew AGOA.”
