Dusting is without a doubt one of the most mind-numbing chores that constantly needs doing. But it can also seem a little reductive: you polish your coffee table and go to wipe off the dust, only to see the little specks flying into the air. Even if you’re retro and use a feather duster, it’s impossible to catch all the microscopic particles that ubiquitously float around the room. This can lead to a whole host of unpleasant symptoms including irritated eyes, itchy throat, and even issues with your respiratory system. Luckily, there’s a genius hack that can solve the never-ending dilemma – and all you need is a sock (preferably a clean one). Cleaning expert Iwan Carrington, who shot to fame for his appearance on Stacey Solomon’s show Sort Your Life Out, shared the tip online. “To stop the dust going up into the air, I quite like to use just an old sock and make it damp,” he said. “Then, I just pop it on my hand and then you can wipe away dust really easily and it doesn’t go into the air so you’re not breathing it in.” After dunking a white sock into a warm bowl of soapy water, Iwan wipes along the fireplace and instantly collects all the dust, while leaving the metal sparkling. “There we go!” he added. “Look how shiny that is now.” While many viewers thanked Iwan for the easy hack, others were a little more sceptical. “I always use a microfibre cloth,” said one user – to which another replied: “They are brilliant.” If you’re not keen on using your old socks as a duster, you can pick up microfibre clothes from your nearest supermarket or online. Tesco is currently selling a pack of four said to ‘ trap dust and remove dirt and grease with ease ‘ for just £1.80. That works out at just 45p each. Have you tried the sock hack?
