Everyone’s favorite dandy deceiver, the villainous Sideshow Bob, has returned to The Simpsons. Springfield beware. In an exclusive clip from Sunday’s new episode, Bob actually pops up further from Evergreen Terrace than ever before. The clip opens with the Simpson family spying on him from the adjacent room of their shared suite in a White Lotus-style resort. Marge suspects he may be cooking up a sinister plot against his new girlfriend, but Homer selfishly pleads for them all to drop it: “We’re on vacation, and Bob’s only an attempted murderer! Attempted!” “My ears are burning,” Bob purrs as he waltzes into their room. “Sideshow Bob!” they scream in unison. Sideshow Bob, formally known as Dr. Robert Underdunk Terwilliger Jr., PhD, is one of The Simpsons’ most adored villains. He’s sophisticated, persnickety, has a penchant for high culture, and an undying hatred for Bart. He sounds a lot like Frasier Crane, and that’s because he’s been voiced by Kelsey Grammer since his first episode, 1990’s “The Telltale Head.” Bob’s unsuspecting girlfriend is voiced by Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Fineman, marking her first appearance on the long-running sitcom. Bob’s put the Simpsons through plenty of grief over the past 35 years, including forcing them into the Witness Relocation Program, rigging an election to become the corrupt mayor of Springfield, and actually successfully killing Bart in a 2015 episode (only to bring him back to life because it would be too dull without such an evenly-matched rival). This time, he binds them to a pact of silence by using the fact that they’re “squatting” in a wing of his suite against them. “Now let’s see what your options are. A, you expose my past to my wife while I get you arrested for trespassing; B, everyone keeps quiet and we all enjoy,” he says, gesturing out the window at the resort’s pool. “Okay fine, one week,” Marge concedes. “But if your wife turns up dead, even once,” Homer threatens, “we’re calling the cops.” The Simpsons season 36 kicked off on Sept. 29 with the usual cast of returning voice actors, including Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright Hank Azaria, and Yeardley Smith. They were joined by an all-star crew of voice guests, including Amy Sedaris, Mark Proksch, Danny DeVito, and playing themselves, John Cena, Tom Hanks, Joel McHale, Conan O’Brien, and Seth Rogen. The clip from this Sunday’s episode ends with Marge resolving, “Well, I guess we’re trusting the psychopath.” “Sociopath,” Bob corrects. “Two distinct diagnoses, with a slight touch of the narcissist.” The pact is made, but that surely isn’t the end of Bob’s antics. The rest of the episode, titled “The Yellow Lotus,” can be watched on Fox at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, Oct. 6.
