East Anglia boasts many beautiful small towns and villages – with many of them steeped in history. However one village in Suffolk stands out as one of the UK’s best preserved medieval villages. Lavenham has featured on the big screen and welcomes thousands of tourists from around the world every year following its appearance in a Hollywood blockbuster. Only an hour’s drive from Cambridgeshire, the village is famous for being an amazingly preserved village with historic beamed houses, as well as the set for one of the movies in the Harry Potter franchise. De Vere House featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) as Harry Potter’s childhood home. It can be seen by walking down Water Street. De Vere isn’t the only impressive historic house in the village. The wattle and daub houses all over the village are painted all different bright colours from yellows, oranges, reds and pinks, and have been perfectly preserved dating as far back as the 13th century. Another one of its famous houses is The Crooked House on the High Street which is famous for looking like it could topple over any second. The 600-year-old home is owned today by married couple Alex and Oli Khalil-Martin, who bought their dream house after knowing each other less than a year in 2021.
