The Script singer Danny O’Donoghue has told how ended up in hospital after a night’s drinking with Tom Jones. Danny, 43, says he ended up with an irregular heartbeat after a long haul on the champagne with the Welsh legend. The Dubliner and Welsh musician, 83, got to know each other when they were on the judges panel on The Voice in 2012 alongside the likes of Will.i.am and Jessie J. Danny revealed they enjoyed drinking champagne at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester but struggled to keep up with the She’s A Lady singer. Every time they finished a bottle of champagne, Sir Tom would ask for another and the two would continue drinking until each bottle was empty. Danny ended up in the hospital as his heart ‘flipped into a different rhythm’. When he woke up the next morning, Danny felt like something was wrong and rushed to the hospital to make sure everything was okay. He said: “I didn’t know what was going on so I went to the hospital – and I got atrial fibrillation from drinking nothing but champagne for six hours.” Speaking to NME, he revealed he took a few days off from filming to focus on his health. He said: “It was my fault because I should have stopped drinking very early.” The NHS website states atrial fibrillation ‘is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate’. The website also states: “It may be triggered by certain situations, such as drinking too much alcohol or smoking.” Danny quit The Voice two years after joining the panel. At the time, the reason for Danny stepping away was unknown. During his first series, he became embroiled in controversy over his rumoured romance with runner-up Bo Bruce – which he denied. However, she later accused him of “cutting her off” and claimed that they “had a thing”. But just after winning the second series with his act Andrea Begley, he quit the show. He continued performing with his rock band The Script. Heartbreakingly, the year the band had their first taste of success in 2008 also saw Danny’s dad Shay died of a stomach aneurysm on Valentine’s Day. His mum Ailish died on the same day in 2019 after suffering a brain aneurysm six years prior. Her health scare in 2013 was the reason Danny quit The Voice. “I enjoyed my time as a judge and mentor and I think the misconception is that I got annoyed with it,” he told the Daily Mail. “But when Mum had the aneurysm I had to retreat from the public eye because I knew I couldn’t be a family man, look after The Script and be on a show as demanding as The Voice as well.” For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here and sign up to our daily newsletter here.
