Scarborough’s Oceans 6019 bar is set to host the first Australian Beer Pong League event launching on July 7 in a coup for local pong enthusiasts. Presented by Gage Roads, the tournament will take place each Thursday night from 7pm for eight weeks. The winner will receive bragging rights over WA’s State Team title. Registrations are open for teams of two, with a team name mandatory.

Founder Anthony said he and friends had been playing regularly at the coastal venue and sought to raise the stakes in what is believed to be the only active beer pong tournament of its kind in Australia. “Over the years, we’ve been competitively playing beer pong at Oceans bar on Sundays. There’s always been a prize for that,” he said. “So we decided to create the league, and coming up on July 11 is round one.” Players will contend for a $4000 first-place prize, with a total of $12,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. If that wasn’t enough, a “perpetual trophy that will stay above the wall” might get the competitive juices flowing. With five official point-scoring rounds, teams are not required to attend each week, though it would reduce the potential to score points in their bid to qualify for the Grand Final.

While the game consists of equal parts skill and fun, Anthony suggested a few competitors would look to take luck out of it. “Some of the players are really serious. They want that title, and they want that money,” he said. While the number of team registrations is limited, few barriers to entry encourage a mixed pool of players. “People from all over WA are welcome. And they can be internationals as well,” Anthony advised.

Hoping to resurrect the competitive beer pong scene, the man behind the operation admitted a “hangover from COVID, and the cost of living” had thrown even The World Series of Beer Pong in Vegas into disarray. Should the sport’s pinnacle re-start, Anthony hopes his tournament will provide a pathway to players keen to test their arm on the world stage. “We want to send our winning teams to Vegas to compete,” he said.

Held in the iconic Scarborough watering hole, a host of entertainment and food specials will ensure the good times roll all night — even if you miss out on a table. With an MC and DJ to get the party started, Oceans will offer $8 Gage Roads beers, $10 chicken wings, and a feast of fun activities. Anthony hopes the combination of gameplay and mouth-watering specials might draw people out of their mid-week cocoons as the cold weather sets in. “What better way to spend a dreary night in winter,” he suggested. With tournament registrations close to capacity, players are encouraged to act quickly to
