Britney Spears, following in the footsteps of music legends like Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, John Lennon, Amy Winehouse, and Aretha Franklin, is set to have her life story portrayed on the big screen. The 42-year-old icon, who earned the title ‘Princess of Pop’ during her peak, churned out a series of smash hits including ‘Baby One More Time’, ‘Oops! I Did It Again’, ‘I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman’, and ‘Toxic’. Jon M. Chu, the director behind ‘Wicked’, has been tasked with the exciting challenge of bringing Spears’s memoir ‘The Woman in Me’, released last autumn, to life. However, he’s currently faced with the tough decision of casting the lead role, with contenders such as Millie Bobby Brown from ‘Stranger Things’, Sydney Sweeney of ‘The White Lotus’, Emma Roberts from ‘American Horror Story’, singers Sabrina Carpenter and Tate MacRae, and TikTok sensation Addison Rae all in the mix, reports the Mirror. Upon the film’s announcement, fans immediately took to Reddit to suggest Brown for the role, with comments including: “So… It’s gonna be Millie Bobby Brown isn’t it? I remember that being floated as a [hypothetical] casting” and “What about Millie Bobby Brown.” The Stranger Things star, who recently tied the knot with Jon Bon Jovi’s son Jake, expressed her connection to Spear’s story during an interview with Drew Barrymore, saying: “Her story resonates with me. Just growing up in the public eye, watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger.” “I don’t know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way.” Roberts recently addressed the Spears rumours in a conversation with Cosmo. “I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears,” admitted the star. “It’s a rumour, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to ‘In the Zone’ and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorise every word.'”. Roberts also confessed: “I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I’m always like, ‘God, he must think I’m so weird.’ That’s some millennial parenting.” Meanwhile, ‘Espresso’ singer Carpenter has been proving her suitability for the role, even covering one of Spears’ most popular tunes on tour last year. One fan wrote on Reddit: “I don’t think there’s anyone better than Sabrina Carpenter to play Britney. She’s one of the better actors Disney has put out, in my opinion. She’s got the thousand-watt smile, the insane stage presence, the not-so innocent appeal. Plus she can sing damn well. Feels like no-brainer to me.” As well as Sweeney and McRae, a fan suggested Rae “needs to play” Spears. Someone else reluctantly agreed: “I hate that this is maybe the only person I could agree with in a small way but I don’t immediately hate the idea. She would capture her looks and charm quite well.” But who would you choose?
