Two Ryanair pilots have been killed on their way to work in a horrific motorway crash involving two lorries.

Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and senior first officer Jamie Fernandes, 24, were travelling to Liverpool airport in a taxi when the car was caught up in the collision. Both men died at the scene on the M62 in Cheshire, while the taxi driver remained in hospital last night with serious injuries.

The driver of one of the lorries, a 61-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.

Tributes were paid yesterday to Mr Greenhalgh and Mr Fernandes after their deaths at around 5.30am on Thursday on the westbound carriage of the motorway between junctions 7 and 8.
