A woman has divided opinion after showing off her beautiful blown out hair after labour – it takes seconds to achieve. We all know those momentous pictures that parents get when they welcome a baby into their family. Capturing the very first moment you lay eyes on your baby after they have been born can be so special. But, the reality is that for many mums, the last thing you want to do after pushing your baby out – and likely don’t look or feel your finest – is getting the camera out. Of course many women don’t care how they look in the amazing moment, but it has become common for people to do their hair and make-up for the occasion. One American mum Josie Balka, who is a social media content creator and hairstylist, says she had “matted hair” when she gave birth to her two little girls, but when welcoming her third child and son into the world she “cracked the code on having a blowout for birth”. Taking to her Instagram page @josie_balka, the mum-of-three said: “My third birth and the first time my hair wasn’t fully matted after. Heatless curls during labour might be the biggest slay!” The Tennessee business owner showed how she used a heatless hair curling ribbon – which has become one of the most viral and popular ways to achieve blow-dry style hair without using heated appliances. Josie says she was able to keep her hair out of her face during labour and once the baby was born she was picture ready; her partner pulled out the curling ribbon and she was left with perfectly styled hair. The mum divided opinion after sharing her hack online – while many complimented how she looked and rated her trick, others pointed how how appearance should not matter while giving birth. Speaking about their experience, one mum said: “I made sure my nails and toes looked immaculate when I gave birth. I had on makeup and my hair was done. We already feel like shit with the last few weeks of pregnancy, why not boost our confidence and self esteem during labour?” One other who wanted to make sure they felt their best, added: “When my water broke I rushed to tint my eyebrows and do some cute braids and makeup…it’s like the one thing we can control in such a crazy experience let us have it.” One other woman who has experienced giving birth said: “I did my hair in between contractions while badly haemorrhaging because it was the only thing I could control and it kept me from panicking.” One other confessed: “When I felt the first contractions at home I took a bath, washed and dried my hair and then curled it.” Complimenting Josie, another commented: “I think this is absolutely brilliant! I’m the type of woman that likes my hair out of my face when I’m doing anything, let alone giving birth! The fact that you figured out a way to keep it out of your face and off your neck, but it also gave you that kind of curl, is absolute genius!” But some people couldn’t understand it. One individual said: “I think I’m one of the only mommas who didn’t care how I looked during birth.” Another added: “Imagine worrying about what your hair looked like while giving birth…” One other pointed out: “I’m too worried about the baby and me not dying when giving birth that I honestly don’t care what I look like.” The NHS has no outlines for what you can and can’t do with your hair and make-up for labour but you must remove all jewellery, piercings, and false nails.
