The 154-room five star hotel is set among pine-clad hills above the pretty natural port, Cala Llonga. The area is relatively calm in comparison to the bustling tourist spots of Ibiza town, the nightclubs of Sant Antoni on the west side of the island and of course the legendary Pacha, which celebrated its 50th birthday last year. However, if you do fancy a night of clubbing, pretty much everywhere on the white isle is a twenty-minute taxi drive. Mondrian Ibiza Julius Hirtzberger Mondrian Ibiza is the twelfth hotel for the Mondrian brand, following Singapore, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, London, Doha, Mexico City, Cannes, Bordeaux, Seoul and Hong Kong. And soon, there will be openings in Tulum, Dubai and Australia’s Gold Coast. Hyde pool, Ibiza Hyde Next door to Mondrian, also newly open, sister property Hyde will appeal to a younger crowd, with all day Balearic beats and live DJs around poolside. Guests of the Mondrian are welcome to share the pool and restaurants of Hyde (Cuyo and Bungalow). Both hotels are part of the global Ennismore lifestyle group that includes design hotels, restaurants and bars. Artwork curated by London-based collective Gone Rogue has been selected to capture the essence of Ibiza, such as pieces like Ash by Corine van Voorbergen and Kissing of the Sun and the Moon by Lauren Baker. And the sea is nicely represented by Ocean View by Hannah Nijsten in the Lobby Lounge. Accommodation Mondrian Ibiza Julius Hirtzberger Designed with simplicity and cool, clean lines, the 154 rooms and suites (some with sea views and balconies) have a soothing color palette in earth tones against concrete walls. Local raw materials have been reimagined in new forms: wood, leather, linen, stone, or cement in the selection for finishes and furniture. Signature pieces such as intertwined natural leather webbing headboards represent old Balearic furnishings, and the wooden slat cabinets are inspired by the dry docks where fishermen keep their boats and utensils by the sea. Mondrian Presidential Suite terrace Mondrian Each room features a king-size bed, terrace, spacious ensuite, some with bathtubs, all with refillable Malin+Goetz toiletries. Forest view studios and one-bedroom suites have separate living spaces. Sea-view suites offer lovely views of the coastline while the Mondrian Panoramic Seaview Suite features a large wrap-around balcony. The top Mondrian Grand Suite is a 62 square-meter sanctuary with a generous 80 square-meter private terrace complete with day beds, a private cabana and an intimate al fresco dining area combining luxury and complete privacy. Eat and Drink Niko, at the Mondrian, Ibiza Javier de Paz Garcia Breakfast is substantial with a vast buffet at both Hyde and Mondrian and a la carte choices. For a quick coffee and pastry, The Perq in the lobby is a nice option while Sun & Moon is Mondrian Ibiza’s all-day bar hangout offering light bites and drinks. For dinner, Niko is the Mondrian’s fabulous Asian fusion restaurant with a generous menu of nagiri, maki and a sushi bar, where diners can see freshly caught fish prepared in front of them. And don’t miss the delicious miso black cod. Niko also offers two tasting menus with sushi, robata and chef’s selections. This summer, Niko and Cuyo (at Hyde) restaurants will host a series with some of the world’s top chefs chosen from the World’s 50Best Restaurants. The first will be at Niko on 21 June, featuring the current top female chef in Asia, Chef Pam. Chef Pam Pichaya Soontornyanakij has opened a string of successful restaurants and bars and is the youngest Thai female chef to receive ASIA’s Best Female Chef from the World’s 50 Best. To Do The old city part of Ibiza town getty There isn’t a spa at the Mondrian but there is a well-equipped gym and outdoor yoga led by an expert instructor, on deck above the pool, is included for all guests. Another great activity included for guests is a fantastic guided hike through the nearby hills with Balearic Outdoor Adventures, led by the knowledgeable and expert guide Michael “Stivi” Stivanello. The Mondrian has its own ferry dock and is a stop on the regular schedule of ferries to nearby Ibiza town (30 minutes) or the pretty neighboring island of Formentera. Once you’ve wandered through Ibiza town and hiked up to the castle, stop for lunch at Ca n’Alfredo, one of the oldest restaurants in the island that’s loved for serving traditional Ibizan dishes including freshly caught local fish and delicious stews, accompanied by island wines. For dinner, cocktails and late night dancing not far from the Mondrian, a good choice is the newly launched Mr Porter Steakhouse, Bar & Lounge that has opened near Ibiza town, as a pop-up for the summer. The roast beef carpaccio and roasted sea bass in adobo sauce are particularly good. Practicalities A double room at Mondrian starts from 350 euros. Ibiza is around a two-hour flight from most major European cities with plenty of daily flights during the summer. A good choice from London is British Airways who fly several times a day from Heathrow and City airports. Follow me on Twitter or LinkedIn. Check out my website or some of my other work here.
