Glastonbury is swinging open its gates for another year with festival-goers ready to enjoy a jam-packed weekend of music and arts. Acts set to grace the Somerset festival’s many stage this year include Coldplay, Dua Lipa, SZA, Shania Twain, LCD Soundsystem and Idles to name just a few. Gates to Worthy Farm in Pilton opened up in the early hours of Wednesday, June 26, with hundreds of thousands of music fans piling in to set up camp before three full days of music get underway from Friday (June 28). Glastonbury-goers found out the full line-up of acts at the start of the month and have been busy planning how to spend their weekend ever since. But there are several slots on the schedule that are yet to be announced. Each year, Glastonbury organisers like to add a bit of mystery to the mix, leaving a few gaps in the timetable for unannounced acts. Some big names have performed at the festival in such slots, including the likes of Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, Mumford and Sons and The Last Shadow Puppets. Some acts perform under pseudonyms, such as when the Foo Fighters turned up on the Pyramid Stage last year as ‘The Churnups’, sending fans into a frenzy as they speculated over the meaning of the name in the run up to the festival. It’s also not uncommon for artists that are billed on one of the main stages to pop up for an intimate appearance at one of the festival’s smaller venues, like Lady Gaga did in 2009 when she performed an impromptu show in Shangri-La. Organisers like to drop clues as to who is playing secret sets around the festival over the weekend, and sometimes announce who it is by sticking up posters around the site just moments before they come on stage. This year, there are dozens of slots that are yet to be announced, including an hour-long set on one of the main stages that is tipped to be filled by a big name British band. Here’s what you need to know about the secret sets worth keeping a close eye on and who could perform in them.
Who could play the Woodsies secret set on Saturday?
The biggest secret act is likely to be whoever plays Woodsies between 6pm and 7pm on Saturday. The Woodies stage, formerly known as the John Peel stage, has hosted secret slots for huge names in the past – including the Killers who packed out the tent – and the field surrounding it – back in 2017. Last year, Hozier played a secret gig on the stage and Blossoms and Rick Astley also popped up as a surprise act, performing a covers set of classic songs by The Smiths. This year, strong rumours suggest that the hour-long TBA slot, between Fat White Family and Yard Act, will be filled by Brit rock legends Kasabian. In fact, William Hill suspended betting on Kasabian filling the slot shortly after the full line up was revealed. With their new album Happenings coming out in a matter of days, Kasabian are set to play two big shows the week after Glastonbury, including a massive homecoming gig at Victoria Park in Leicester. The band are also set to headline Latitude in Suffolk, which takes place at the end of July this year. While it’s widely believed that Kasabian will be performing in the slot, other suggestions have been floating around. Kings of Leon and Pulp are among the bookies’ other favourites. Pulp had been hotly tipped to make an appearance at the festival last year after reuniting and embarking on a UK tour which saw them pop up at several festivals. This year, the band are playing several dates in the US and Europe later on in the year but whether they’ll show up at Glastonbury remains a mystery. What we do know is that frontman Jarvis Cocker will definitely be on the farm as he is billed alongside Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor for a DJ set in the Stonebridge bar and appearing as a speaker in the Green Futures field. Meanwhile, American rockers Kings of Leon will be in the UK during Glastonbury weekend, leading some to speculate that they could pop over to the farm to perform. The band are set to play London’s Hyde Park on Sunday night, so could Glastonbury be a warm up gig for the Sex on Fire hitmakers?
When are other secret sets this year?
The BBC Introducing stage, which showcases emerging artists, will host two secret sets over the weekend – one on Saturday afternoon and another on Sunday evening. While the stage typically hosts less well known names, some pretty famous faces have popped up in recent
