Rishi Sunak has been mocked for saying he “went without” Sky TV as a child. The loaded Prime Minister said there were “all sorts of things” he wanted as a child that he couldn’t have. The SNP said it showed Sunak “is completely out of touch with families in Scotland”. The Tory leader comes from a wealthy background. His dad was a GP and his mum was a chemist. He was schooled at the posh Winchester College, which currently charges nearly £40,000 a year for day pupils and over £50,000 a year for boarders. He is the most wealthy PM there has ever been, with him and his wife having a combined wealth of over £650 million. When asked in an ITV interview to give an example of what he has gone without, Sunak said: “There’ll be all sorts of things that I would’ve wanted as a kid that I couldn’t have. Famously, Sky TV, so that was something that we never had growing up actually.” He added: “What is more important is my values and how I was raised. “And I was raised in a household where hard work was really important … service to your community was important. “And my parents worked very hard for what they had and they wanted their kids to have a better life.” Sunak’s upbringing is very different to Labour leader Keir Starmer, who was the first in his family to go to university and did not pay for his education. Starmer’s dad worked in a factory while his mum was an NHS nurse. SNP candidate for Glasgow East David Linden said: “Yet again, Rishi Sunak has shown he is completely out of touch with families in Scotland, who have had to sacrifice a lot more than a Sky TV dish over the course of fourteen years of Westminster austerity cuts, Brexit and a cost of living crisis. “It shows why it’s essential to vote SNP to get rid of this Tory government and put Scotland’s interests first. “Neither Sunak or Starmer are offering change at this election. The Labour Party would continue imposing Brexit and another £18 billion of cuts – meaning less money to help families with the cost of living, less money to tackle poverty, and less money for the NHS and schools. “On 4th July, vote SNP to reject Westminster cuts and secure a future made in Scotland, for Scotland.” To sign up to the Daily Record Politics newsletter, clickhere
