Daniel Sturridge exploded in celebration in the FOX Sports studio when Jude Bellingham’s incredible 90th minute equalizer spared England an embarrassing Euro 2024 exit. England were on the brink of crashing out to Slovakia with the score seemingly locked at 1-0 in Germany, before Bellingham scored a sensational acrobatic kick with a minute of stoppage time left. It sparked wild celebrations from England fans across the globe – including Sturridge in Germany, where he is covering the tournament for the American soccer fans.
As Bellingham’s shot hit the back of the net, former England striker Sturridge leapt out of his seat and screamed ‘Come on! Get in there! Let’s go!’. FOX Soccer even posted the clip out on social media, captioning it: ‘Daniel Sturridge was every England fan after that late Jude Bellingham goal.’ Sturridge was sat between Peter Schmeichel and Alexi Lalas in the FOX studio and until then, had endured another miserable England performance at the tournament. But Bellingham’s goal sparked an incredible England comeback and took the game into extra time. Then, star striker Harry Kane put England 2-1 ahead.
‘I’m delighted. They’ve got themselves into this position, an amazing opportunity to get themselves into the quarterfinal,’ Sturridge said at a moment of greater composure during extra time. When the game was won, he added: ‘That goal is right up there, very high up there. 30 seconds to go I’m thinking they are going home. The belief, the patience in the squad is amazing.’
Tom Brady, a part-owner of Birmingham City – the club where Bellingham began his soccer career – was also cheering for England. ‘Jude,’ Brady simply tweeted with a succession of ‘mind-blown’ emojis. Then, when Kane added another, Brady tweeted again and said: ‘Harry!!! What a game!!!’. As a result of their comeback win, England will face Switzerland on Saturday.
