Rory McIlroy’s major tournament results have been more difficult to predict than those of Scheffler and Schauffele. McIlroy’s tie for 22nd at the Masters and tie for 12th at the PGA Championship are not bad results, but in comparison to the season’s two major winners, they do not put him close to ending the 10-year major drought. The US Open has been McIlroy’s best major over the last five years. He finished in the top 10 in each of those starts. McIlroy took second behind Wyndham Clark last year in Los Angeles. He has three second-place major placings since his last major triumph in 2014. He comes into Pinehurst with four straight top-15 finishes on the PGA Tour, which is not bad for any golfer, but in comparison to Scheffler, it needs to be a bit better. McIlroy’s recent US Open performance suggests he will at least be in the mix come Sunday, but whether he can reach Scheffler’s level remains to be seen. Prediction: Top 10 Finish Gambling problem?
