THE BODY of an Irishman missing in Italy has been found, according to local media. RTE and local newspaper L’Union Sarda reported that the find occurred in a remote location, and a helicopter was used. The 39-year-old went missing while hiking on Sardinia and was reported missing after he failed to return on Friday afternoon. Italian Media outlet RAI reported that his family raised the alarm at around 2pm. He was hiking the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica. An intensive search operation has been underway since, and it’s believed that drones and thermal imaging technology were being used. Members of the Alpine Rescue Team along with a rescue helicopter and dogs were also part of the search. Searches continued throughout Friday and Saturday night. It is understood the Irish national separated from the group on Friday morning for a solo hike. He was not seen since, until his body was recovered earlier today. RAI and other Italian media outlets reported that the man’s body was found on the side of the Canale de Sa Rocca Niedda by a search dog. It’s understood he was holidaying with family and was hiking with his brothers. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
